Ransomware is a form of malware that prevents a user from accessing their files, operating system, or applications.

The malware encrypts the victim’s files and data, making it inaccessible and unusable. The attacker will then demand a ransom in order for a user to regain access to their files.

This ransom often has a time limit on it; if they cannot meet the deadline, then the user will often lose access to their files forever. Ransomware can gain access to a device through phishing attacks. These attacks trick a user into downloading a file containing the malware.

It can also gain access through exploiting vulnerabilities in a system’s data security protections. In this case, the malware can come from unsafe websites or download pages. It can even spread through hardware, like infected USB drives.
