IT Manager : "I work as a one man IT shop for a small manufacturing company. The budget for new IT doesn't always equal the expected growth. Peer discussions have led to an understanding that enterprise class equipment isn't always the best solution."

Each of the following situations represents actual scenarios encountered over the years by SMB's.

Scenario 1: A small company has recently implemented virtualization as a way to cut costs and consolidate resources. The virtualized servers, like the company's data, needs to be backed up. Storage and backup costs need to be kept low. Is high end, enterprise class storage and backup equipment the only good option?

Scenario 2: A department needs a large amount of storage set up quickly and the employees realize the data will be updated frequently. Is a traditional file server their only solution?

Scenario 3: A consultant wants to set up a storage and backup solution in their small or home office that can be accessed from the road. This device should allow them to backup up data without continuous monthly costs. Should they only consider cloud based storage?

In all of these scenarios, the answer is no. The quality of less expensive NAS devices has improved in recent years and would provide a suitable solution for each of the above scenarios.

Over the past fifteen years as third and fourth generation devices became available, the quality, reliability and cost of NAS has come down. The per device cost was lowered even further as hard drives increased in size and the per megabyte cost lowered.

Recently, most of the major home and small office orientated manufacturers have been producing devices that are able to be utilized by the SMB.

In the first example, an inexpensive NAS could be used as a storage location for implementing disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T). This is very important if backup data must be made immediately available. This solution could be made additionally redundant with the introduction of a second, duplicate NAS to act as a failover for the primary NAS. Several vendors already offer this as an option.

In the second example, a company may have a Graphics department which stores large amounts of data that is modified frequently and may need to be moved to other network storage devices later. The IT department would explain to the Graphics department that the NAS is primarily for holding data temporarily. The file server(s) would hold the archive data and backups would occur on a regular basis. Many times one copy of the data would reside on the local machine, with a backup on the NAS.

In this scenario, the raw data might be substantially larger than the capacity of the file servers, but the finished projects may be reasonably sized.

Finally, in the last example, the consultant may wish to opt away from paid cloud solutions and instead implement an office NAS with an option for forward facing network access. This would be more flexible than a USB connected device and still provide large amounts of storage.

In Conclusion:
The utilization of NAS could provide projected savings of thousands of dollars to businesses as rackmount NAS can be purchased for as little as $1,300.00. This is in contrast to the $10,000.00 enterprise solutions available today.

As always, a more permanent archive backup solution would need to be implemented (DVD or tape).

And finally, an important factor to consider is that often times the level of support and the warranty is not as robust as those for higher end products. But this trade off is something decisions makers may be willing to accept in order to save money on a solution that can provide similar results.
